this technique works best if the chisel has the cutting edge slightly bullnosed, you can read here why this is so. Same procedure for the top border of the upper lid, here i did not forget to show you how i hold the chisel to make the removal cut. if i would have wanted make them as thick as on the reference foto, i would simply repeat the stop cut line and removal cuts, i did not cut the eyelids as deep as on the reference fotos, i wanted to have them a little less thick in the end. Here i made the removal cuts by flipping the #2,12 chisel upside down and cutting towards the stop cuts…this shapes the top of the eyeball nicely. it is important to not make it too high, otherwise the eye becomes a suppised expression (if you want that, then of course push the upper lid high), so its better to err on the other side and maybe draw it a little too low, you then can shift it up later if you see it got too low… then make stop cuts along the line, using one of the 2 chisels, take the larger one whenever possible to match the line, otherwise use the smaller and “walk it along the line” so to say. I want to begin by defining the upper lid, so i choose two #2 chisels,if you have them it is good to use chisels matching the lines, if you don´t have enough chisels, i will show you here that you can do the job with just these 2 chisels… draw the lower border of the upper lid, looking closely to the reference image to get it correct. STEP 4 refining the shapes, and carving the details
